Protein is still trending, and every drive-thru company is happy to tell you exactly how many grams your kid’s Chicken Tender meal is packing. What those brands leave out is how those tenders got their crunch: a deep fryer.

That detail matters.

Protein really does keep kids fuller longer and cuts down on the “can I have a snack?” chorus an hour later. But pairing that protein with heavy fryer oil and full can turn into foggy, heavy, and cranky before bedtime.

You may have heard there’s a difference between healthy and unhealthy fats, because not all fat behaves the same way in the body. Some of it’s working for your kids. Some of it’s working against them. Here’s the difference:

What fat is actually doing in the body

Fat is a core macronutrient. It helps the body absorb vitamins, supports hormone regulation, and keeps the brain functioning. It’s processed through the liver and slows digestion, which is exactly why a basket of crispy tenders feels so satisfying in the moment.

If you want to read more about the other two macro-nutrients, protein and carbs, you can read our blog post on it here.

Healthy fats vs. saturated fats

Unsaturated fats, or the “healthy” fats, lower cholesterol and help build cell membranes using Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, which also help manage inflammation once the liver processes them.

You’ll find them in:

  • Avocado & avocado oil
  • Fish like salmon
  • Olive oil
  • Nuts and seeds

Saturated fats are the unhealthy fats that work against you. They interfere with the liver’s ability to clear cholesterol by signaling it to produce fewer of the receptors that bind to LDL, leading LDL to build up in the blood vessels instead and driving inflammation and plaque.

You’ll find them in:

  • Fried and processed foods
  • Sausages and processed meats
  • Red meat
  • Whole milk & heavy cream

Unsaturated fats: lower cholesterol, aid in cell membrane building, manage inflammation. Icons of olive oil, salmon, and avocado.
Saturated fats: Raise cholesterol, cause inflammation, and longer term health risks. Icons of chips, fries, and sausage.

The short version: healthy fats build strong, resilient cells. Saturated fats build inflammation that adds up over time.

So, do the drive-thru tenders have to go?

Not even close. This is actually the good news:

At Konala, our chicken tenders never see a fryer, because healthy and high-protein foods aren’t trends to us.

That means your kid still gets the high protein that fills them up and supports growth, just without the saturated fat load and the food-coma slump an hour later. It’s a tender you can hand your pickiest eater and actually feel good about, maybe even enforcing your Mom tax to get a bite for yourself.

It’s not complicated. A quick dinner at Konala is as tasty as it is high-protein. Our mom-approved chicken tenders launch October 1st, 2026. Order them online here or come by our drive-thru!
